When your body starts telling you something

Hi Reader,

Yesterday I wrote about what happens when life gets busy.

Lunch gets squeezed between two things. Dinner moves later. You stay up because you finally have an hour to yourself.

For a day or two, you might barely notice any change. But when those days start to string together, your body often begins to tell you.

Your digestion might change. And what I hear the most, feeling bloated after meals sets in, becoming constipated even or suddenly find that foods you normally tolerate don’t sit so well. That is one way your body might communicate with you.

This change in rhythm can also show in lighter sleep becomes. You might wake during the night or feel tired in the morning despite having been in bed for long enough.

It could be headaches, cravings, afternoon tiredness, irritability or feeling wired at the end of the day or your period might arrive with stronger symptoms than usual.

And it can be difficult to know what caused what.

Take bloating.

It could be something you ate. But it can also appear because you ate lunch much later than usual. Or because you ate again before the previous meal had properly digested. Or you hardly ate all day, arrived home starving and ate far more than your digestion could comfortably manage in the evening.

There has simply been a sequence of small changes in how you’ve been eating, sleeping, working and moving through your day. And your body responds to that sequence.

This is one of the reasons I don’t want to give you another list of things you should be doing.

I want you to understand your own patterns.

Because when you can see what tends to happen before your digestion changes, your energy drops, your sleep becomes unsettled or your period becomes more difficult, you have something useful to work with.

That is where we begin in Back to Rhythm.

During the first part of the programme, you'll learn how to observe the signals your body is already giving you and understand them through Ayurveda.

Because there is another question that comes up once you start paying attention:

How do you know which of those signals matters — and what to change first?

Changing everything at once doesn't tell you very much. And for most of us, it isn’t realistic either.

This is often the point where we start looking outside ourselves for the answer.

Someone on Instagram says to stop eating a particular food. Someone else tells you to eat more protein. You read that you should fast, eat earlier, take a supplement or start your day in a completely different way.

Some of that advice may be very good advice. But it still might have very little to do with what is happening in your body.
